Preparation

If you're applying to damp wood, make sure the wood has been drying for at least 5 hours before painting.
Make sure it's a warm, dry day (above 10°C). Clean the wood with a stiff brush to get rid of any dirt. If you're spraying it on, always read the sprayer instructions first.
Check you're happy with the colour, find a small hidden patch of wood and try it on first.

Application

With a brush
Get loads of Ultimate Fence Life on your brush. Put a thick coat on and if you see any drips, brush them in.

With a sprayer
Pour the liquid into the tank. Pump it up or turn it on and start spraying. When spraying use long, sweeping, horizontal arm movements. Move along the full length of the panel, drop down and do the same again. Overlap by 50% with each pass. This will make sure the whole area is covered with the correct amount of product.

You'll need 2 coats but, if your wood is very weathered, you may need another coat. Leave 4 hours between coats.

Clean up

Take as much product as possible off your brush and then clean it in warm, soapy water.
If you've used a sprayer, follow the clean up instructions in the sprayer instruction manual.

Don't empty any Ultimate Fence Life Concentrate into drains or watercourses. Your local authority may have special ways to get rid of waste product.

Why do I need to protect my fence or shed?

Fences and sheds are made of wood. If you don't protect wood it'll turn grey in the sun or rot in the rain. At best it won't look good. At worse, it'll collapse. You can choose two different kinds of Fence Life to protect it. One Coat gets the job done fast. 5 Year Weather Defence needs two coats but will last year after year, after year. Revise with correct products.

How does the Precision Finish Power Sprayer work?

Our new Power Sprayer paints a fence panel in just 2 minutes. What's different is the power settings. You can control how it sprays. It has an accuracy setting so you can do the fiddly parts of your fence, with a small spray pattern. A control setting, that has a wider spray pattern, ideal for filling in gaps. Setting 3 is made for speed. Covering large areas, quick.

Can I use a brush to apply Sprayable Fence Life?

You don't have to use a sprayer to apply our Sprayable One Coat Fence Life, you can still use a brush. To get the job done as quickly as possible, we'd recommend using a wide brush. Get loads of Fence Life on your brush and put a thick coat on, be careful not to spread it too far. If your wood is very weathered, you may need to put another coat on, just make sure to leave about 4 hours between coats.

Can I use a jet wash to remove paint from my fence?

We wouldn't recommend using a jet wash to remove paint from your fence. The wood needs to be clean and dry, or the new paint won't stick properly. Use a stiff brush to get rid of any dirt.

Can I use the non-sprayable Fence Life in a sprayer?

You can't use our standard Fence Life in a sprayer. If you do, you might end up damaging the sprayer by clogging it up. If you want to use your sprayer, pick up a tub of our Sprayable Fence Life or Fence Life Plus+

How do I clean the Fence Sprayer?

To empty the sprayer, push the pump handle all the way down and lift the pressure release valve until no ‘hissing’ can be heard. Once the pressure has escaped, unscrew the pump unit and tip any liquid back into its tub. (Alternatively, spray the excess liquid back into its tub before releasing pressure). Remove as much product as possible before cleaning, some local authorities have special facilities for the disposal of waste coatings. Don’t empty into drains or watercourses. It’s important that the sprayer is cleaned thoroughly after use. Don’t leave the sprayer filled with product when not in use or overnight. Rinse out the sprayer several times with clean water, then refill with clean water. Re-pressurise and then spray through the nozzle until the water runs clear, it’s best to do this on the Speed setting. Unscrew the wand handle from the trigger and clean the filter with clean water. Remove the nozzle and white filter and clean with warm, soapy water and an old toothbrush. Make sure you don’t use a sharp object as this will damage the nozzle and ruin the spray pattern. Put the nozzle back together and take care to do this in the correct order.

When should I treat my fence?

The best time to treat your fences is in spring. At this time the temperature is more favourable and vegetation which would normally get in the way will not have grown too much. Treating at this time means the hard work is done in time to enjoy the summer.

How to remove Ronseal wood stain

Old or flaking decking wood stain should be removed with a pressure washer and stiff wire brush. Use the pressure washer first to remove most of the stain, then a stiff wire brush to get rid of ingrained stain and dirt. Leave your decking to dry for at least 48 hours before you apply a new stain or paint. Wood stain on outdoor furniture can be stripped with Garden Furniture Stripper.

How to remove Ronseal fence paint

Our fence paint can be easily painted over, so if you want to change the colour or freshen up the paint, just paint over it. You might need several coats if your covering a dark colour with a light one and vice versa. For paint that’s flaking or peeling, you can sand the damaged area and cover the old paint with a new one. If you don’t have any sandpaper, you can use a stiff wire brush which will also remove dirt too. If your fence paint has splashed onto concrete or patio, a pressure washer or a stiff wire brush with some hot soapy water should get rid of the fence paint.
