Before You Start

Make sure the room is above 10°C. Remove your furniture and open your doors and windows to minimise the odour.

How to prepare unvarnished wood

Prepping your floor will help you get the perfect finish, so it’s worth your effort. Don’t forget to wear a face mask to protect you from the dust.

  1. Sand your floor with 120 grit sandpaper – it’s easiest done using a floor sander
  2. Sand along the length of the boards and let the dust settle
  3. Run the vacuum around and wipe your floor down with white spirit
  4. If you spot any holes or imperfections, fill them in with our Multi-Purpose Wood Filler

How to prepare previously varnished wood

The amount of effort you need to put in depends on the state your floor is in.

  1. Lightly sand with 120 grit sandpaper, going the length of the boards and let the dust settle
  2. Vacuum up the dust and wipe your floor down with white spirit

For old varnish that’s flaking off the wood, repeat step one using a floor sander and strip it back to the bare wood.

Application
  1. Put down a dust sheet and carefully remove the Perfect Finish Pad from the tray. There may be some varnish at the bottom of the tray so the dust sheet will protect your floor from globules of varnish. Assemble the pad and give it a quick vacuum to remove any loose bits.
  2. Give the varnish a really good stir and test the colour on a small patch to check you’re happy with the colour.
  3. Start in the corner furthest from the door and work along the length of two floorboards at a time. Make sure you don’t varnish yourself into a corner!
  4. Three coats will give you the best protection but you need to leave two hours between each coat. Before you begin the third, use 240 grit sandpaper (without the floor sander) and very lightly sand the floor. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and then apply the third coat. You’ll be able to walk over it in two hours but will need to wait 24 hours before putting your furniture back in. After 72 hours, it’ll be tough enough to stand up to almost anything.
  5. The varnish easily washes off with warm soapy water, so don’t worry if you get some on yourself.

To clean up, simply wash the pad in warm soapy water

Aftercare

Regular cleaning

Perfect Finish Diamond Hard Floor Varnish can be vacuumed and swept without causing any damage. Remove any dirt or grit that could scratch the floor and use a damp microfiber cloth or mop to clean surface stains and scuffs.

Deep cleaning
